We Kicked Ass!

Even though we didn't win.

Here are some photo highlights. (Click photo to see it full-size.) Stay tuned to your email next week for a link to other riveting photos.

Scott scored our only goal and didn't even make a big deal about, like he'd done it a millions times. Nice.

Ronson did an excellent job coaching, cheering and smack-talking the other team. While I agreed with all of his decisions and smack talking.

Kelly and Kari had the looks and the moves.

Even though the other team scored five goals, Brian's save percentage was least 97 percent. Without him, the other team would have scored about 400 goals.

Even though he had to play nearly the entire game, LeShaun, miraclously, was still smiling at half time.

CRASH COURSE: POSITIONS

BASIC POSITIONING: On purpose i've eliminated more complex positions
(sweeper and stopper) to keep it simple.
The goal here is to learn the basic placement and jobs each position does.

FORWARDS: (one center striker and two wings) - The team's primary
offense and goal scorers. Their role is to advance the ball from
midfield toward the opposing goal by dribbling, passing, and shooting.
Forwards need to be fast and have endurance with the ability to
dribble and shoot on goal.

MIDFIELDERS (or Halfbacks) - Play between the forwards and the
defenders. Halfbacks play both offense and defense. Their primary
objective is to receive the ball when it is "cleared" by teammates
from the defensive zone, and pass it up to the forwards for scoring
opportunities.
Midfielders probably have to do the most running because so much of
the action will take place in the middle third of the field. They are
the transition between defense and offense. Think of them as hybrid
players. Both offense and defense.

FULLBACKS (Defense) - Line up between the midfielders and their team's
own goal. They form a row of three fullbacks and are the last line of
defense before the goalkeeper. Their primary responsibilities are to
prevent opposing players from scoring goals and to clear the ball up
to the midfielders.
Fullbacks have a tough job. They have to stop the offense and kick the
ball with power up to the midfielders (who then kick to the forwards).

GOALKEEPER - Stands in front of the goal to block shots by opposing
players. The goalie is the only player allowed to play the ball with
his or her hands and can do so only when inside the 18-yard "penalty
area" surrounding the goal.
Goalkeepers often times are cross-dressers and will steal your wallet.
That's why we make them play goalie. 1: So we can keep an eye on them
and 2: So we can easily trap them in a net if they get out of line.

UNDERSTANDING POSITIONING AND MOVEMENT:
Obviously you are not chained to the ground in the position you start
in. You will run around and leave your original spot, what you will
not do is work your way out of position.

A good way to undestand how you'll move on the field and stay in
position is to think of Foosball. the players on each stick move
across the field, but stay in relative position with their teammates.

If the action shifts to one side of the field you and your teammates
will shift as well, but you won't cross into your teammates territory
across or up the field.

EXCEPTIONS:
During corner kicks the entire team will flood the offensive zone to
try and score (fullbacks will hang back more to get back into position
quicker.

* don't laugh. i copied a lot of this stuff from this website.

CRASH COURSE: THE FIELD

THE FIELD (OR PITCH): A little larger than an american football filed the soccer pitch *may* be as scary to your lungs as a shark to a swimmer.

CENTER SPOT: Barely worth mentioning, the Center Spot is where the ball is placed to start a game and a half. The ball is also placed here after goals are scored. See. Its fairly worthless.

CENTER LINE: If this were not co-rec soccer the CENTER LINE might be just as worthless, but its not. In fact, one of the biggest rules for this league involve the CENTER LINE. Its called the TOUCH rule and i’ll explain it later.

CENTER CIRCLE: Used when the game is being started or restarted (SEE CENTER SPOT). The team kicking off to start the game can be inside this circle, The team starting on defense must be outside the circle on their side of the field until the ball is kicked by the offensive team.

* A coin toss determines what team gets to start the game on offense. Just like american football.

PENALTY AREA: If a player ON OFFENSE is fouled inside this area the player is awarded a penalty shot to be taken from the.... PENALTY SPOT

The PENALTY AREA is also the zone on the field where the goalkeeper is allowed to use their hands to play the ball. Outside of the area is a no-no.

GOAL AREA: I gotta be honest. I think The GOAL AREA is only there because there is a goal in it.

TOUCH LINE: The sidelines. If the ball completely exits THE FIELD at the touchline the team that did not knock it out is awarded a THROW-IN.

END LINE: The field boundary at the ends. When the ball travels completely over this line the result is a little more complicated than a mere throw in. The results are either a CORNER KICK or a GOAL KICK.

CORNER ARC: The arc isn’t really so important, but what takes place there is. When a CORNER KICK is awarded, the ball must be placed within this arc for the actual kick. more on CORNER KICKS in a later e-mail.

Ok. So, that’s the field. Pretty basic stuff. Of course, learning about the field brings up more questions about the rules of the game. CORNER KICKS, GOAL KICKS, THROW INS etc. but for now, revel in the knowledge you you know all about the soccer field!

This is Mike realizing how bad we are. But don't Sue and Doug look crazy athletic?

Illness is crushing the Kickin' Kinkades. (Illness and Easter weekend.) Another team photo, minus Pat, who someone escaped the camera.

THE SPRING 2006 KIT!

"Kit" is soccer speak for uniform. There will be a quiz.
Ok. This is a rough approximation of what our jerseys will look like.
The logo is accurate.
The size of the logo and shade of blue could change, but you get the idea.
Thanks again to Rob for the logo.

Remembering Practice #2...

No photo evidence this time, but another excellent practice this past Saturday (and I'm not just saying that cuz I actually made it this time). Ten of us braved the muddy fields of Oakley and I can say that my skills are all the better for it (for one, I've got my grunting DOWN).

So, if you haven't yet, come to a practice! It's a great way to get to know the team. Once you've accidentally kicked a ball in someone's face, you've made an instant friend.

Now, as the deposed Motivation Captain -- apparently it involves bringing snacks -- I leave you with this invaluable quote:

“If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain.”
